What is VISTA?
AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a full-time,
national service program for individuals interested in developing
lasting solutions to the problems of poverty in America. AmeriCorps*VISTA
members serve in community and faith-based nonprofit organizations
and with other agencies and local governments to develop and expand
services and programs that help bring low-income people out of
poverty.
The AmeriCorps*VISTA program has been addressing the needs of
impoverished communities since 1965. In total, more than 146,000
individuals have joined forces with 13,000 local organizations
to strengthen poor communities and help people escape poverty
across the nation.
CBVC receives funding from two sources, the first being a small supervision grant from the Corporation
for National and Community Service. The remaining
funds are raised locally through a
sponsor cash match of $5,700.
CBVC members serve one year (365 days). The majority of this
commitment is in service through their sponsoring sites. However,
up to 300 hours may be devoted to training, member development
and disaster services. Members are required to attend Pre-Service
Orientation. Sponsors are selected through a competitive process
based on their proposal that meets CBVC objectives and critical
community needs.
A partnership between the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American
Red Cross and the Corporation for National and Community Service
makes this program possible. These organizations bring their combined
expertise in service to rural communities, AmeriCorps, volunteer
management and a mission of "getting things done." The
Oregon Trail Chapter manages all CBVC placements.
