The Oregon State Service Corps (OSSC) is a statewide AmeriCorps program that provides nonprofits, community and faith-based organizations, government agencies and schools with the opportunity to sponsor an AmeriCorps member. AmeriCorps members placed at these organizations (called placement sites) address significant issues in the areas of education, homeland security, public safety and human needs through direct service and volunteer mobilization. OSSC strives for geographic diversity in its portfolio of sites, including placement at small community and faith-based organizations.
Full-time OSSC members serve 1,700 hours over an 11-month period. The majority of the 1,700 hours is in service through the placement sites. However, up to 300 hours may be devoted to OSSC training, member development and community disaster services. Part-time members serve 900 hours over a 9 to 11-month period and up to 175 hours may be devoted to OSSC activities. For all members, the term of service begins in early September 2008 with an OSSC orientation.
Placement sites are selected through a competitive process based on their proposal for a direct service project that addresses OSSC objectives and meets critical community needs. The majority of the program's funding comes from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The remaining portion, approximately one third to one half, is raised locally through a placement site cash and in-kind match.
What do OSSC members work on?
This year, Oregon State Service Corps members are recruiting volunteer tutors, helping young people and adults prepare for emergencies, leading afterschool activities that keep kids off the street, teaching life skills to at-risk youth and referring low-income families to local resources.
