PORTLAND, Ore. – July 4, 2007–American Red Cross Disaster Action Teams responded to two house fires during the July 4th holiday. At 6:00 PM volunteers suspended their Fourth of July festivities and responded to a single family fire in SE Portland providing emergency relief services for one adult.

The same Disaster Action Team volunteers then responded to another single family fire in the early morning hours on Thursday. At 3:00 AM, volunteers were awakened not by fireworks but by a fire call to Southwest Portland. Red Cross Volunteers provided disaster relief services to 5 adults and 2 children in one home and another 2 adults from a neighboring guest cottage that was damaged by smoke.

Even during the holidays, local American Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers are on call to provide relief services to families whose lives have been tragically altered by disasters. On the scene and around the clock, the Red Cross is there.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare and respond to emergencies. Oregon Trail Chapter Red Cross volunteers respond to residential fires and other disasters every 40 hours on average. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from Oregonians.
