Release of American Red Cross and American Heart Association Guidelines for First Aid
WASHINGTON, D.C. – November 28, 2005 – Today, the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association (AHA), jointly released the 2005 Guidelines for First Aid. The first aid guidelines are a culmination of Red Cross and AHA efforts who co-founded the National First Aid Science Advisory Board to review and evaluate the scientific literature on first aid. This Board was made up of representatives from organizations that are considered key stakeholders in first aid. From the consensus of this group, the first aid guidelines were established to set the standard for the way people respond to many common first aid emergencies.
In addition to the availability of the first aid guidelines on www.redcross.org, the guidelines will be published as part of the December 13, 2005 issue of Circulation. This issue also includes the 2005 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. A preview of that document is available at www.americanheart.org/eccguidelines.
Although changes based on the new guidelines will be incorporated into new and revised courses and products, current training methods for CPR are not incorrect or harmful in any way, but improved methods, based on new information we have learned over the past few years will make it easier for those learning CPR to respond in the event of an emergency and possibly save a life.
