Red Cross Supports Firefighters Battling
Five-Alarm Blaze
Portland, Ore. – July
13, 2004 – Volunteers from the American Red Cross
Oregon Trail Chapter were called to support 120 firefighters who
successfully contained a potentially devastating fire in Forest
Heights.
The Red Cross was called at 1:00 p.m. for canteen services to
keep firefighters hydrated and energized while tackling large
blazes in hot weather. Stationed at the scene, six Red Cross volunteers
worked for about nine hours serving 200 sandwiches and countless
cups of lemonade and water.
About every 32 hours the Red Cross received calls from local fire
bureaus to help families affected by fire. On some occasions,
bureaus contact the Red Cross to help firefighters facing challenging
conditions.
These important Red Cross services to firefighters and emergency
workers are provided thanks to the generous support of Oregonians.
