Red Cross Responds to a Duplex Fire
in SE Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. – December 13, 2004 –
AmeriCorps members serving through the American Red Cross Oregon
Trail Chapter helped 11 people take steps to recover from a
fire that left them homeless.
The Oregon Trail Chapter received a call from Portland Fire
& Rescue at 4:30 p.m. Three AmeriCorps members, who were
trained by the Red Cross to respond to provide disaster relief,
arrived on the scene. They were accompanied by a VISTA leader,
serving through the Red Cross, who has more than three years
of disaster relief experience.
The cold weather and heavy rain made it difficult to work with
the families so the group moved to a local pizza place, where
the Red Cross was able to provide them dinner. An AmeriCorps
member who was fluent in Spanish helped identify the needs of
the families while the other members completed necessary paperwork
and activated client assistance cards. Issued by the Red Cross
after disaster strikes, this new form of cash enables families
to benefit from the convenience of debit cards rather than using
cash or vouchers.
The Red Cross made arrangements for lodging, new clothing and
shoes, meals and other immediate needs. This support is provided
thanks to Oregonians who give generously to the American Red
Cross Oregon Trail Chapter.
