Red Cross Responds to Apartment Fire
PORTLAND, Ore. – August 3, 2003 – Emergency services
volunteers from the Oregon Trail Chapter assisted individuals
and families displaced by a two-alarm fire early Sunday morning
at the Evergreen Apartments on NW 19th in Portland.
The fire started at approximately 4:20 a.m. in the nine-unit apartment
building. Damage ranged from moderate to severe, with two tenants
hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. Disaster action
team volunteers, a disaster health volunteer and disaster mental
health volunteer from the Oregon Trail Chapter arrived at the
scene to aid the families. The first priority will be assisting
with the immediate emergency needs, such as providing vouchers
for food, clothing and shelter. Red Cross emergency service caseworkers
will then meet with the families to determine their long-range
recovery needs.
The Red Cross also provided canteen services to firefighters.
Volunteers distributed food and beverages, ensuring that firefighters
had the energy to battle the blaze. This morning, volunteers has
to use the Prepare Oregon van to serve firefighters because the
canteen vehicle was being used to feed search and rescue team
on Mt. Hood that was looking for the remains of Fred Frauens.
This assistance is offered at no charge to Red Cross disaster
clients, who are served thanks to the generosity of Oregonians
supporting the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross.
