Red Cross Helps Firefighters and Residents
During Three Alarm Fire
PORTLAND, Ore.—July 29, 2003—Red Cross volunteers
were called early afternoon to provide canteen services to more
than 80 firefighters battling a three alarm fire on SE 41st in
Portland.
Six volunteers set up a tent on the street to provide some shade
and served sandwiches, cold water and lemonade. Meanwhile in the
apartment manager’s office, five family services volunteers
and two mental health volunteers helped displaced residents assess
their immediate needs and process the unfortunate incident. Vouchers
for lodging, clothing, meals, groceries and other immediate needs
were provided.
The fire destroyed six units at an apartment complex, affecting
10 people. One resident returned from the store to find her building
on fire and feared the worst for her cat named Scout. When she
found him, Scout calmly walked into a carrier and she swiftly
transported him to safety. “This is the second fire I have
experienced,” said Scout’s owner. “I am very
relieved I did not lose too much but after all, it’s just
stuff. I’m just thankful that no one was hurt.”
This assistance was offered at no charge to Red
Cross disaster clients, who are served thanks to the generosity
of Oregonians supporting the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American
Red Cross. To become a volunteer or support Red Cross services
with a charitable contribution, call (503) 284-1234.
