RED CROSS RESPONDS TO BEAVERTON MULTI-UNIT FIRE

June 16, 2003 -- A morning blaze at a Beaverton apartment complex displaced 50 residents this morning, half of them children.

The American Red Cross, Oregon Trail Chapter was contacted at approximately 10:15am to assist the fire victims and canteen firefighters from five area departments including Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue and Portland Fire Bureau.

The three alarm fire at the Canyon Plaza apartments on SW 108th and Canyon Road burned five units and left 19 units uninhabitable due to smoke and water damage and utility cut off. Fourteen Red Cross volunteers specializing in mass care, family services, logistics, public affairs, damage assessment and casework arrived on the scene to assess needs and communicate procedures for delivering assistance.

Oregon Trail Chapter volunteers opened a shelter and service center at St. Mary of the Valley in Beaverton to further assist the victims of this morning's fire.

This assistance was offered at no charge to Red Cross disaster clients, who are served thanks to the generosity of Oregonians supporting the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross. To become a volunteer or support Red Cross services with a charitable contribution, call (503) 284-1234.
