Introduction | Locating your LMS ID | Register and obtain an ID | LMS Login Page | Instructions: Login, Development Plan, Time Zone Setting, Learning History, Catalog, Registration

Introduction

American Red Cross and most Oregon Trial Chapter Courses are managed through the web based Learning Management System. Current volunteers have all been entered into the system, and new volunteers receive their LMS Student ID and password during the Local Operations class, or than can self register.

Locating your LMS ID and Password. If you do not know or cannot remember your password, follow the instructions on the LMS Student Login page to retrieve that information. Alternatively, Kelly Scott can look up your ID and reset your password. However, this will take longer than contacting LMS directly. Remember, you will need to turn off or disable all pop-up blockers on your computer before using the system.

  • If you do not have an LMS ID, see the Register instructions below.

Register. To obtain an LMS ID and Password, you need to register with LMS.

Note the automatically generated ID number, fill in the registration fields, and click Submit. (Make sure to also note your password.)

LMS Login Page

The LMS login page is located at: https://learningctr.redcross.org (see below)

Instructions

  • First Time Users should read the instruction under "Need Assistance" to assure that they comply with the computer set-up requirements.
  • Login is simple, just click on the Student Login button on the left. This brings up the main Login page (below).

  • Enter your Student ID and password and click Submit.
  • Navigation through the different LMS pages is accomplished by using the blue menu bar on the left side of the page (below)

  • The Development Plan (above) lists the current classes for which you are registered, both online and classroom. You can find more information about the classes by clicking on the links. The training department can add classes to the development plan at your request, or if there is a prerequisite you need or a requirment you need to satisfy to be eligible for work in a particular volunteer activity.
  • The Development Plan: Online classes. Online classes are tracked through the Development Plan. If you started an online class, but did not have time to finish, click the "Begin/Continue Course" link to take up where you left off.
  • Regional Settings (time zone). When you are entered into the system, LMS does not automatically know in which time zone you live. This can cause confusion because class times are based on your time zone and notifications will be incorrect if your time zone setting is not accurate. Therefore, it is a good idea the first time you log in to check your time zone setting.

  • The Learning History page (below) lists all of the classes you have taken under the LMS ID you used to login to the system. Click on "Learning History." In most circumstances, this should inlcude all of your LMS classes plus classes recorded in the previous system (CHERS).
    • WMD Pilot Project. However, you may have taken classes under a different ID for the ARC/FEMA Weapons of Mass Destruction pilot project. That Project required a new ID exclusively for those classes and that info is not transferrable to your regular ID. You printed certificates from those courses to demonstrate that you had compelted them and as of now that is the only proof of completion available.
    • Old/Obsolete Courses. In a flurry of activity early in 2007, a couple of "Data Entry Parties" were held in emergency services to transfer training records into the new LMS system. Voluteers and staff entered the learning history from the previous training system and created records for all current ES responders who had not already been entered into LMS. During that data entry blitz, if courses from the previous system were obsolete or had been updated by more current information, or if the volunteer had taken a more recent version, then those historical courses were not entered. For example, both the Health Services and Disaster Mental Health activiities have updated courses. The ARC recommends that all volunteers in those activities take the updated version and considers previous versions obsolete. Obsolete course codes are removed from the program and cannot be entered.
    • Renamed Courses. Some courses were given new names in the new system. For example the Emergency Services Interview is now Local Operations.

    • Class Info and Certificates . You can click on the class name link for more information about the class. To print a certificate of completion, click the Print link. However, it is not necessary to print certificates for LMS classes because the ES Training department has access to the Learning History as and can verify that you have taken a class by checking the computer.
    • Classes you took somewhere else. Some volunteers take classes at other chapters or directly from national ARC. These classes are NOT recorded in your OTC LMS record. At the completion of such classes you are always issued a Red Cross course completion card for that class. Remember to bring a copy of the card into the ES office so we can enter that class into your record.
  • Catalog. To find out when classes are offered, click Catalog (below). Make sure you have confirmed that your Time Zone is listed as PST (see Time Zone above) so the times listed for the classes will be correct.

  • Course Catagory. Most classes Disaster Resonders are looking for will be listed in the Disaster Courses category in the Course Category box. Scroll down and click on the Disaster Courses listing. This will confine your search to that category.
  • Class Title Contains. Type part of the class title, if known. For example if you are looking for a sheltering class, type shelter.
  • Click Search to search the contents of the catalog. The Courses meeting your criteria are displayed.

  • More Information.
    • Click on the red "+" symbol to expand the window to view all classes that are currently scheduled. If there are no Course IDs listed, the class is not currently being offered.
    • Click on the Course name to see more information about the course. ([Incomplete] will appear next to the prerequisites if LMS does not have a record of your having completed the required course.)
    • Click on the Schedule ID (#2 above) to find out what time the course is being offered.
  • Complete List. If you did not type in a partial course name, LMS will display a comlete list of the Disaster Courses, 10 at a time. If you want to view the entire list at once, locate the View All link at the bottom of the page. Then browse through the list to find the course you are looking for. To inquire further about a particular course follow the "More Information" instructions above.
  • Complete the Registration. There are several screens to navigate through to complete the registration process. You must go through each one to be registered for the class.
    • Click on Add to Cart
    • If you want to order more classes, return to the catalog and repeat the process. When you have placed all your classes in the Cart, click on the Shopping Cart link to return to the Shopping Cart Page.
    • On the Shopping Cart Page, Click Checkout
    • On the Checkout page, click Place Order. This will complete the process.
  • Prerequisites not satisfied. If you get an error message indicating that prerequisites have not been satisfied and you cannot place your order, revise your plan to take the required course. If you believe you have already taken the course, or have scheduled the required course but have not yet completed it, send your issue to Kelly Scott.
